Gigapixel Range Explorer
Stream multi-gigapixel ESO & NASA archives (starting with the 3.3 GP Eagle & Omega Nebulae) over HTTP byte ranges using 1–16 WebAssembly SIMD workers and level-lock pixel inspection.
IMI (.imi) & IMIJ-Set (.imijset) · Multi-Core SIMD, Intermediate & Scientific Imagery
IMI is an experimental image format and archive ecosystem designed for workflows where decode speed, 4–16 thread scaling, rich sample types (baseline u8, u16, f16, f32; signed i8, i16 via signed_samples; extended u32, i32; wide u64, i64, f64 via wide_samples), extended channel layouts (Gray, GrayAlpha, RGB, RGBA, CMYK, Oklab, OklabAlpha via pixel_models), and 2-RTT HTTP byte-range region access matter more than squeezing the last 15% of web-delivery file size.
Stream multi-gigapixel ESO & NASA archives (starting with the 3.3 GP Eagle & Omega Nebulae) over HTTP byte ranges using 1–16 WebAssembly SIMD workers and level-lock pixel inspection.
Filter by image class (photos, screenshots, pixel art, 32 scientific arrays, 4K/8K browser WASM), compare IMI decoder-speed modes (Quick, Fastest SplitHuf, RunLevel, 16-lane lossless), and run live browser trials.
Watch IMI codestreams decode in 3D layer-by-layer (DC base slabs, transform/palette maps, Smart-Bits MSB/LSB byte planes, and rANS streams) across 13 distinct images, or encode your own PNG.
Interactive bit-and-byte register diagrams for the 64-byte file header, 40-byte IHDR, record tags, 16-lane rANS streams, unit_ordinals, and imij-set Morton catalogs—verified at test time by spec_proof.rs.
JPEG XL and AVIF achieve ~10–25% smaller files than IMI at matched perceptual quality and on lossless photos. When network transfer size for end-user web delivery is the primary bottleneck, JPEG XL, AVIF, and zenjpeg are the right tools.
IMI is built for internal processing pipelines, scientific/detector arrays (photon counts, DEMs, CCD frames), multi-gigapixel tile servers, and browser WASM applications that need 1.1–3.2 GS/s 8-thread native decode (or 339–390 MP/s in 16-worker browser WASM) with 2-RTT HTTP random access.
